Själö is located in the heart of the Archipelago Sea, just a few nautical miles north of Nagu. The island has a truly unique history within the Finnish archipelago, shaped by dramatic human destinies and a distinctive architectural heritage.
In 1619, King Gustavus II Adolphus ordered the construction of a leprosy hospital on Själö. Its remote location was considered ideal for isolating those afflicted by the disease. From the late 18th century until 1962, the island functioned as a mental hospital, and most of the buildings standing today date from this period. Today, these historic surroundings host several different activities, including the University of Turku’s Archipelago Sea Research Station, as well as a wide range of visitor services such as a restaurant, accommodation, meeting facilities, saunas, and activities for both small and larger groups.
Själö can be reached year-round by a connection ferry from Nagu. During the summer season, from May to September, there are also daily services from Turku and Rimito.
